Sun or photo-damaged skin is characterised by fine lines and wrinkles, a lack of elasticity and tightness, areas of pigmentation, blemishes and a duller canada-goose-outlet-toronto. UVA & UVB play different roles with regard to tanning, burning and skin ageing. This is due to the fact that they differ in their biological activity and the depth to which they penetrate into the skin.
Whilst UVB is probably the form of UV radiation that most people are aware of it is UVA radiation that is responsible for the skin ageing effects outlined above. The ageing affects of UVA radiation are well documented and there have been numerous studies undertaken investigating the impact of UVA on skin ageing.
A study conducted towards the end of the 1990’s has recently been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine (1) adding further weight to the link between the use of daily sunscreen and a reduction in the visible signs of skin ageing.
The study carried out in Australia is one of the first studies of its kind to show these results in humans over such a long period (4 and a half years). Led by Senior Scientist, Dr Adele Green, 903 adults aged between 25 & 55 years used a sunscreen with an SPF 15+ on their face, arms and hands through the study period. Participants used sunscreen either on a ‘daily’ basis or at ‘their discretion’.
Silicon impressions were taken of the back of the participants’ hands at the start of the study period and after 4 and a half years, to assess the level of skin ageing represented by fine lines. The researchers found those using ‘daily’ sunscreen were 24% less likely to show increased wrinkling over the period than those who used it when they deemed it ‘necessary’. The study results show that ‘daily’ sunscreen use can reduce the visible signs of skin ageing.
